Schwarzenegger almost as "popular" as Bush in Calf.

Awhile back there was some wild speculation that McCain stood a chance at winning Calf. this year, especially with Schwarzenegger supporting him.

That now seems a distant possibility as best (thank goodness), as even the once popular Gov is now polling slightly ahead of President Bush in Popularity according to SUSA (37% to Bush's 31%).

Why the drop? Some speculate it is the budget cuts he has proposed, such as cutting 4.4 Billion from public education.

"It's not personal. It's business," teachers association spokeswoman Sandra Jackson said. "It's not an attack on Arnold--it's about his budget."

The Ponzi sceam-ish sounding plan to fix the budget by borrowing from future lotto profits hasn't earned him a single legislator supporter in the state, of either party.

Are his days numbered?

Re: Schwarzenegger (none / 0)

I don't think he can run for re-election in 2010. There is spec he may run for Boxer's seat, but thats not happening.

The Cali-fuehrer is termed out in 2010 (none / 0)

There's talk about him running against Babs for Senator, but it is unlikely for at least two reasons. One is that he wants to be the star, and a Senator is one of 100 in the supporting cast. A junior Senator in the minority party--not the fun role. Also he would not want the commute; it's about an hour plane ride from Santa Monica to Sacto, and a lot further to DC. Maria would probably oppose it. He would have a good chance of losing the race, and his supersized ego would rather retire undefeated. He can go back to making crappy movies for too much pay.

The 2010 CA-Gov race should be very interesting, and likely will return a Dem to the top job. At this point the Attorney General would be the favorite. You may have heard of him--former Gov. Edmund G. "Jerry" Brown. Other possibilities include the Lite Guv, John Garamendi and the Mayors of L.A. and S.F. The best candidate for the Greedy Old Party is the Insurance Commissioner, Steve Poisoner, a rich guy who can self-fund and is the Repubs only statewide officeholder other than Gov. Scheissekopf...

Re: Schwarzenegger almost as "popular" (none / 0)

Politicians get elected to do a particular range of things.  When they've done those things, the end can get pretty weird.

Usually the politician overestimates what voters want or are willing to let him/her do.  So they do something pretty ambitious (and often pretty cynical) and it just blows up with the electorate.

A lot of times it's just like Schwarzenegger here- they do some significant thing that is widely seen as a pretty good thing.  (Here, probably his going out on a something of a limb for gay marriage legalization.)  But the support collapse happens and just isn't intuitive.  Well, it reflects that the previously set collective agenda in the popular mind is simply fulfilled.  People can't find a way to associated the person with the next things they consider important to do.

Some leading politicians can find a way to zip to the front of the new parade, to champion the agenda following the one they were initially elected for.  But it's rare.  Schwarzenegger was elected for a couple of things- to put an end to the 1998/2000 moderate Democrats' negative campaign strategy, for one.  To cut back on schools and social services to a certain extent when the prosperity of 1996-2000 ended but the population continued to expand.  And, it seems, to slowly back California into gay marriage legalization, better environmental laws, and put it on the road to near-universal healthcare.

But he's apparently not considered the guy to run the next phase, which is active and positive (re)expansion of and upon these things, a lot of management and planning and finding money to get things going.
